What is naloxone HCl?

Naloxone HCl is a medicine designed to rapidly reverse the effects of a life-threatening opioid emergency. It is used to revive someone during an overdose from many prescription pain medicine or street drugs such as heroin and is available as an over-the-counter medicine.

How does naloxone HCl work?

Naloxone works by competing with the opioids to bind with the same receptors in the brain reversing the effects of an opioid overdose in 2 to 3 minutes. This allows time for emergency personnel to arrive. ​

Is Padagis Naloxone Nasal Spray the same as NARCAN® Nasal Spray?

Yes, Padagis Naloxone Nasal Spray has the same active ingredient as NARCAN® Nasal Spray and works in the body in the same way to treat opioid overdoses.

Can you overdose on naloxone?

When using Padagis Naloxone Nasal Spray, some people may experience symptoms after administration, once they wake up. Some of these symptoms can include shaking, sweating, or increased anger. These symptoms are common effects to medication use.

Does Padagis Naloxone HCl Nasal Spray work if someone is not breathing?

A person does not need to be breathing for Padagis Naloxone Nasal Spray to work. Padagis Naloxone Nasal Spray is sprayed in the nose and the medicine is absorbed there (by the nasal mucosa). It does not need to be inhaled for the medicine to work.

Are there any side effects or warnings when given naloxone HCl?

When using Padagis Naloxone Nasal Spray, some people may experience symptoms when they wake up, such as shaking, sweating. nausea, or feeling angry. This is to be expected.

Can I reuse the Padagis Naloxone Nasal Spray Device?

No, each Padagis Naloxone Nasal Spray device only sprays one time and contains one dose of medicine. Do not test device before use. Each box includes 2 nasal spray devices.

Other information:

  • Store at room temperature or refrigerated, between 36°F to 77°F (2°C to 25°C)​
  • Do not freeze.​
  • Avoid excessive heat above 104°F (40°C)​
  • Protect from light.​
  • The product is packaged in individually sealed blisters. Do not use if the blister is open or torn, or if the device appears damaged.

How do you administer Padagis Naloxone Nasal Spray?

Step 1 – Check if you suspect an overdose:

  • Check for a suspected overdose; the person will not wake up or is very sleepy or not breathing well.
  • Yell “wake up”
  • Shake the person gently
  • If the person is not awake, go to step 2

Step 2 – GIVE 1st dose in the nose:

  • Hold the nasal spray device with your thumb on the bottom of the plunger
  • Insert the nozzle into either nostril
  • Press the plunger firmly to give the 1st dose
  • One nasal spray devise contains one dose

Step 3 – Call

  • Call 911 immediately after giving the 1st dose

Step 4 – Watch & Give

  • Wait 2-3 minutes after the 1st dose to give the medicine time to work
  • If the person wakes up, go to step 5
  • If the person does not wake up, continue to give doses every 2-3 minutes until the person wakes up. It is safe to keep giving doses

Step 5 – Stay

  • Stay until ambulance arrives, even if the person wakes up
  • Give another dose if the person becomes very sleepy again
  • You may need to give all the doses in the pack
